Theme 3 : "Welcome to Hell!"

The multitude of beings condemned for their sins, described by the poet Dante, is an inexhaustible source of creation for Rodin. It is a veritable reserve of expressive themes which he seized upon with passion to create his famous Gates of Hell, his life's work. He also summoned Baudelaire in a powerful imagination where mythological and poetic references are combined. Do you dare to push the Gates of Hell?

Theme 4 : "In⸱visible Bodies"

An investigation into Rodin's Dressing Gown
Temporary exhibition from 15 October 2024 until 2 March 2025

This guided tour recounts the research Rodin undertook to create what he would call his masterpiece, the Monument to Balzac. When the Société des Gens de Lettres commissioned Rodin to create a monument commemorating the great writer in 1891, Balzac had passed away almost 40 years earlier. In order to recreate his character, Rodin investigated Balzac's image and body, which he wrapped in a dressing gown in order to conceal it, thus highlighting the idea and aura of the writer. The critics denounced the work as a scandal, and the monument was never appreciated during Rodin's lifetime. This exhibition offers a reflection on the bodies - real, idealised, statufied and concealed - in public monuments and in the representations that still populate our contemporary world.
